The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against the state of Illinois, the city of Chicago, Cook County and the Cook County Sheriff alleging that Illinois’ laws hamper immigration enforcement operations.
Illinois’ law, the TRUST Act, interferes with the federal government’s enforcement of immigration law according to the suit.
The DOJ’s filing goes on to say “The conduct of officials in Chicago and Illinois minimally enforcing—and oftentimes affirmatively thwarting—federal immigration laws over a period of years has resulted in countless criminals being released into Chicago who should have been held for immigration removal from the United States.”
State Representative Bill Hauter (R-Morton) commented that, “It is time to repeal the TRUST Act and end Illinois’ sanctuary state status. Illinois must comply with federal law!”
