This week the National Weather Service and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency are encouraging all Illinoisans to get prepared for severe weather.
Severe weather preparedness has four key steps:
- Stay informed. Know how to receive severe weather alerts
- Have an emergency plan. Designate safe places to seek shelter
- Prepare yourself and your home for an emergency. Know how to administer CPR, how to use a fire extinguisher, and how to turn off gas and electricity to your home
- Have an emergency supply kit. It should include such essentials as bottled water, non-perishable food, flashlights and batteries, extra clothing, medications, a radio and more.
